John Frances Boles Sr.

John Francis Boles was born January 31, 1884 to  William and Martha Fulk Boles. He was Clifton Sylvester Boles' step dad. He was of Scottish and German origin.  He owned a large farm and had the fish market in the Winston Salem area, where he aslo sold the fruit and veggies from the farm.  He sold Raliegh products door to door for a 100 mile radius.  With 10 boys, he had lots of help. He was a large man who loved music and dancing. Some times we danced and laughed so hard we thought we would go thru the floor

He married Etta Belle Ziglar Sept. 25, 1909. She bore  10 boys and 2 girls and 1 stillborn.
Their Children were-Clifton,Ralph,James,John,Howard,Robah,Reuben,Spenser,Glenn,Norman,Sarah All the above are deceased Etta Lou Boles Hale Mccollum, Evelyn Boles,(Glenn's wife) Barbara Boles(Norman's wife) are only surviving family.. This is Nancy's Grandparents and great grandparents.  She is Clifton's daughter.
Below is Nancy and grandpa on the porch of the old log cabin, that is still standing and I love to visit when I go home. i was 15 at the time.

This was his wedding photo.

Grandpa Boles with Etta Lou?

Look at these sandwiches Sandra! Do they look like pimento cheese? I thought they might but they could be tomato!
Well they very well could be, I just know that just about every dinner we ever had, several of the brothers and grandpa would beg mom to bring tomato sandwiches, so she would make up a bunch of them. And too it could be mayonaise.
Kaye Boles Gough there was always pimento cheese and fried chicken. i just look at all that good food and it makes me hungry lol those little half runner green beans some had corn in them yum yum

Luico and Martha Boles Family - John Francis Boles behind them. Luico's mother Suzanna, is beside him.
Lyn Boles Merritt Guy on left in back is Laurey, brother of grandpa Boles and the oldest. I never heard anything about him, only knew Aunt Cora, Aunt Fannie, Uncle Tom, Uncle Dewey, Uncle Will, etc. A guy contacted me when Daddy died and he was doing some geneology. He said he is the grandson of Laurey and lives in California. He grew up in Stokes/Forsyth and his mother. Laurey's daughter, married a Tuttle. His name is Ralph Tuttle.

Lyn Boles Merritt Also, the little lady on the left is Luico's mother, Suzanna Grubbs Boles. Her husband was John Boles, but I haven't been able to find out much about him or where he is buried. He must have died early. Luico's wife is Martha Fulk Boles..

Donald Boles luico boles, and other family members are buried at Hickiory Ridge United Methodist Church, which located close to Germanton. Also there is a Boles Cemetery located off of Staneyville Road, it runs from the Germanton Rd to Staneyville. Norman and I, before he died, went to the cemetery, but i don't know exactly where it is located. They were building a new sub-dividson at the time, and it was located between the development and other homes facing staneyville rd. My direction could be off as i do not live in that end of town. hope this will add more light of the Boles tree. thanks for the picture as i never have seen a picture of my Great Grand-dad. thanks again

Lyn Boles Merritt The graveyard you mention is on Redwine Drive which is off Stanleyville Drive, off Hwy 8. Luico lived in a house near that graveyard on Redwine and one of the other pictures posted here was taken in front of that house. Luico's sister, Minerva Boles Carmichael, married Brascillia Carmichael and he owned all that land. The Carmichaels lay claim to the history there -- I spoke to one of them before he died. I am not sure who keeps the graveyard up -- I have been there at least 6 times and maybe more. The house has been torn down now, but the graveyard is still there even though there has been building around it. Vandals have torn up a lot of the graves, but there are some main ones salvaged. I have never been able to find John Boles (Luico's dad) there or in cemetery books. I have a note that he could be in the Tuttle graveyard on Bolejack road. There are cemetery records at the library but I can't find him in it anywhere. John was born 4/4/1817 in Stokes but I don't know when he died, probably early in life perhaps. His wife, Savannah/Suzanna died 1/22/1910 she was 88. Luico and Martha died in their 50's, Luico died 11/10/1916, and Martha died 7/25/1914. Grandpa Boles was 76 and Grandma was 72 when they died.

Lyn Boles Merritt According to my research, our line goes back to William Bools of Virginia abt. 1720 and he died in Stokes county abt 1792. They usually spelled their last names the way they sounded. Different members of the family started using Boles or Bowles.

Lyn Boles Merritt I am pretty sure I heard Uncle James and Uncle Ralph say it before. Spelled different ways. I think it was actually William Louis Boles but he was called Louico, Lueco, and I think I've seen some other spellings. Pronouced Lou-i-co.

Lyn Boles Merritt Kaye, Hickory Ridge Methodist on Hwy 8 has a lot of the Boles relatives in it. Luico, his wife, I think Suzannah, his mother is there, and a lot of Luico's brothers and probably sisters are there. I have a list somewhere. Grandpa Boles and many of them helped to build that church if my memory serves me right. Grandpa Boles also helped to build some things at Mt. Carmel Methodist Church like the rock work in the front of the church. The Moravian side of our family came from Grandma Ziglar's family who were Wolff's from Bethania Moravian. Grandpa and Grandma Boles went to Friedburg Moravian when they moved out south of town to Fraternity Church Road. Also, grandpa and grandma Ziglar lived at Old Salem & went to the moravian church until they moved out off of Cherry Street. Then it was too far to go and grandma Ziglar starting going to a local church. They moved closer to where Grandpa Ziglar grew up - his father and grandfather are buried on up Cherry Street, across 52 and turn left at top of hill, then you will see the Oak Summit Community Church Cemetery on left.

Names and birthdates for children in this family come from several different sources and may not be correct. Based on known marriage dates, this order seems reasonable, but it is not certain, nor have we verified that all the children are theirs.
Most of the children in this family moved to Indiana and Illinois. Peter remained in NC, and appears in the 1850 Stokes Co. census, apparently a widower. Daniel and Frederick also remained in NC.
The possibility has been raised that "Nathaniel", about whom nothing else is known, is actually Daniel.

*Some Holder family materials gave her name as Anna Barbara, but we now think this is incorrect, and that it was actually Maria Barbara.
Andreas and Maria Margaretha were the only ones from this generation to move to NC. However, Wilhelm Volck, a son of Jacob Daniel, also moved to North Carolina and is the ancestor of many Fulk descendants there.

Andreas Volck, born About 1678 near Worms, Germany, came to America in December 1708 on the "Globe" with his wife Catharina Meckel, part of the Palatine company of the Reverend Joshua Kocherthal. They had been promised land along the Hudson River in New York, but the settlement failed, and Andreas and his family moved first to Philadelphia and then to Allemangel PA, where they joined the Moravian Church. Andreas died in 1747 in Pennsylvania. Catharina survived him, dying in 1762.
The Volck surname eventually becomes Fulk.
